Our History
The Panhandle Players have been bringing community theatre to Franklin County and surrounding areas since 1987. It all began with the first production of An Evening of Comedy in 1987 at the old Carrabelle High School gymnasium. The Players performed there with productions like Arsenic and Old Lace, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty-the Musical, All Because of Agatha, and Plaza Suite. After performing Pump Boys and Dinettes in 1994, the Players went on hiatus until 2001, when they decided to re-organize and had the opportunity to perform on a real stage at the newly restored Dixie Theatre in Apalachicola.
Panhandle Players, Inc. started off its revitalization with the comedy The Curious Savage and have been bringing quality performances to Franklin County and the surrounding area ever since. Over the years, other venues welcomed the Players in Eastpoint, Port St. Joe, and Carrabelle. Along with the Dixie Theatre, the Players have performed in firehouses, church reception halls, and even at the St. George Island Lighthouse Park, under the stars, with a raised platform as a stage.
Included in our repertoire have been Broadway classics, mysteries, whodunits, comedies, dramas, holiday shows, and more.
In 2016, a new era began with the beautiful Chapman Auditorium as our home. In this historic venue, we have continued to bring community theater to both residents and visitors alike, always looking for and encouraging new talent, and always hoping to please our audiences.
